Valparaiso University Lantern Slide Collection

 Item
Identifier: sc.2016.03.31

Scope and Contents

While the creator(s) of the lantern slides in this collection is unknown, the images have been identified as depicting the University's campus during the period around 1925-1933. Many of the images are found in the University's yearbook, "The Record", from around this time period, within University Bulletins, recruitment brochures, and some within the University publication "The Torch". They contain images of interiors and exteriors of campus buildings, groups of people on campus, students participating in various activities on campus, and campus groups posed for yearbook shots.

Biographical / Historical

The images in this collection are of the university campus, faculty, and students between the years 1925-1933. Because of that time frame, the images bridge the gap between Old School when Oliver Perry Kinsey was President and the beginning administration of Current under O.C. Kreinheder.

There are two figures with strong connection to the collection: Photographer A.H. Reading and Professor M.E. Zimmerman. Some of the slides were also located as printed photographs within the University Archives. Of those, a few were matted and signed by A.H. Reading. That serves as a strong indicator Reading was involved in the process, whether he was the photographer or developed the negatives.

Professor Zimmerman was a prominent Valpo figure, beginning his career during the Old School era and persisting into the 1950's. During his time, especially durng the period in which the photos were taken, Zimmerman was active in many aspects of campus life from building management to the athletics committee and being the manager Brown and Gold Cafe, all of which show up among the photos. Zimmerman's wife and former student Lorena shows up in at least one photo (possibly two).

Lowell Thomas appears in slide 24c. Thomas was a Valparaiso Universtity graduate in 1911, and went on to become a prominent radio broadcaster (among other trades), well known for his association with Lawrence of Arabia.

President O.C. Kreinheder appears in slide 24b and slide 24c.

There is evidence to suggest that some slides are missing from the collection; some slides are numbered as though they are part of a subcategorized series but the other slides are missing. Additionally, sources in which some other slides are located include images that could be a part of the series. Lorena appears in a graduating photo within the 1928 catalog but the slide is not present.

Arrangement

The slides are being kept in order by numbers written on the paper frames of the slides, though no known rationale for the numbers has been found. Some of the slides have the same number but were then classified with letters (e.g 24a, 24b, 24c). While some instances of the letter classification indicate the images belonged to a series, others lack an apparent connection.

The Inventory is provided to identify the slides as they are numbered (note: there are two slides labeled 7a and two labeled 7b).
