Biographical / Historical

Katharine May Ertz was born September 20, 1876 in rural Annawan, Illinois located 140 miles west-southwest of Chicago. She attended Annawan public schools and taught the 1894-95 year in a country school in Henry County, Illinois.

In 1895 she enrolled in the Northern Indiana Normal School in Valparaiso, Indiana. She lived in East Hall and graduated from the Department of Public Speaking and Oratory in 1895. She received a diploma in public speaking in 1896 and her Bachelor of Science degree in 1897.

Katherine married C. L. (Charles Leonard) Bowden, an 1898 graduate of the Valparaiso School of Pharmacy, on August 23, 1900 in Valparaiso. They sailed for Europe and the Paris Exposition on their honeymoon. They traveled in Europe from August to November gathering material for their first two lectures.

"Mr. Bowden, a pioneer in film techniques, and Mrs. Bowden, skilled in dramatics, lived among the Ojibway Indians to film their version of 'Hiawatha.' They were later honored by being adopted into the tribe and given Indian names." "We didn't know what loud speakers were in those days", reports the librarian. In Gainsville, Georgia, for instance, they performed before an audience of 10,000 persons without any means of amplification Chautauqua programs were staged in circus tents. [Carbon copy of letter dated 9/10/1956 to Mr. William O. Wallace at the Vidette-Messenger, but never sent.]

The Bowdens spent three summers among the Indians in Canada getting pictures and photographing the Indian play in moving pictures. The archives of the University is in possession of seven reels of film from that period depicting "gambling," canoeing, peace pipe ceremony, etc. The original lantern slides and film rolls used in this production are part of the Special Collections at Valparaiso University.

According to Who's Who in the Lyceum published in 1906. Katherine's Lyceum work was as follows: Chicago Lyceum Bureau - booked as headliner on their programs. Illustrated lectures: Paris and the Exposition; Trip to Ober-Ammergau and the Passion Play. Christ in Art. Pictorial Story of Hiawatha. These were our original pictures and lectures. We appeared on Lyceum and Chautauqua programs in all states of U.S. except the Pacific Coast states. In Canada from Montreal to Edmonton. Charter member of the American Lyceum Association. The Bowdens toured the United States and Canada from 1900 to 1910 giving illustrated lectures on "Hiawatha" and "The Passion Play at Oberammergau."

From 1912 through 1914, Katharine was employed by Valparaiso University as a librarian. From 1917 through 1920 while her husband was developing and patenting automobile systems, Mrs. Bowden worked at the Tax Stamp Division of the Internal Revenue Department in the Federal Building in Chicago. After an hiatus of a few years traveling, the Bowdens returned to Valparaiso. Mr. Bowden died in 1941 and Katharine was employed as a librarian at Valparaiso University until her retirement in 1950. She was then given the title of Librarian Emeriti and Archivist. Katharine Bowden died October 1, 1965, Beachcliff Nursing Home in Long Beach, Michigan City.
